Vexations (mono)

Vexations (mono)

by Adam James Nall

19:00 24th Nov - 14:30 25th Nov

Sidney Sussex College Music Society presents:

Vexations - Erik Satie

1 piano
10 pianists
20 hours of continuous music

performed by:

Paul Kilbey, Jamal Sutton, Jesper Carlson, Kim Ashton, James Freeman, Tom Athorne, Sarah Latto, Lydia Slobodian, MatthewTait, Will Buchanan, Joe Scott, and Emily Smith.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Although Erik Satie wrote Vexations in 1893 its premiere had to wait until 1963, when the experimental composer John Cage organised a performance in New York. Quite why the piece had to wait seventy years for its first performance is, one is forced to admit, not really a mystery. Logistically it is a nightmare, commercially it is ridiculous, and musically it is a trail of endurance for performers and audience alike. However, since its premiere, a considerable number of performances have taken place, some of them lasting as long as 28 hours. Work has even been done studying its effect on the brain. Was all this what Satie actually intended, when he flippantly wrote:

"To play this motif 840 times in succession, it would be advisable to prepare oneself beforehand, in the deepest silence, by grave immobilities."

at the top of his score? We will never know, and therein lies the vexation.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

These are the mono series taken during (some) of the 20 hour performance. The music was un-nerving and bloody weird, I thought the photos should be too!

Oi Va Voi @ Cambridge Junction 2007

Oi Va Voi @ Cambridge Junction 2007

by Claude Schneider

Oi Va Voi returned to the Cambridge Junction touring for their second, eponymous, album. Since the last time I photographed them a year ago, their female vocalist and violinist have changed yet again, but the band sounded as great as ever.
Again, they were supported by the jazzy grooves of Gil Karpas.

My Luminaries

My Luminaries

by Ieuan Clay

My Luminaries (and a few of The Colours) at Catz MayBall and the KamBar. Now signed to V2, just released "Jumping the Great White", hailed by Zane Lowe and Steve LeMaq as the best band since sliced bread, I'd just like to say "Saw them first", although I'd have to admit my opinion wasn't quite such a career boost.

Oi Va Voi @ Cambridge Junction 2006

Oi Va Voi @ Cambridge Junction 2006

by Claude Schneider

The amazing Oi Va Voi came back to Cambridge to perform at The Junction. Having won a BBC World Music award for their debut album, "Laughter Through Tears", they are due to release a follow-up album in March 2007, and from the sound of their packed gig, it should be great. Nik and Steve provide excellent vocals and solos. Recent joiners Alice McLaughlin (vocals) and Haylie Ecker (violinist with the group "Bond") are wonderful new members of the band, very lovely in person, and rather photogenic!

Black Shabbat - 'Outklezzed'

Black Shabbat - 'Outklezzed'

by Andy Darnton

Taken from Black Shabbat's debut performance at Girton College on Sunday 26th February. The band plays a style of music called 'klezmer-fusion' - which is traditional Jewish music with a funky/latiny/jazzy edge!
